Abigail Spence has had a lifelong love of nature and animals, rooted within her childhood in rural Minnesota. Inspired by books featuring lovable animal characters, namely Watership Down and Badgers of Summercombe, Abigail tried her own hand at writing and drawing stories, and never stopped.
After dabbling in realistic landscapes and animal portraits, she fell in love with exploring colors, silhouettes, and patterns. The meticulous shapes and repetition provide her artistic process with a meditative element. By using animals symbolic with folklore and mythology, Abigail found she could fill her art with character and story, without having to say a word.
Now an experienced artist, her work includes fine art and whimsical illustrations that invite the viewer to find the tale within. Similar motifs come through in her work with Tokheim Stoneware, a local pottery studio and gallery, where she creates beautiful and functional designs.
Beyond her personal work, Abigail takes commissions for design projects and has worked closely with her clients to create book covers, album/podcast covers, and merchandise designs. Her most notable collaboration is Red Rabbit, a magical tale of a rabbit spirit, written by Northern Irish author Emma Elliott, who specializes in Celtic mythology and the animals of the British Isles.
